The excellent rogueclassicism links to an article about Roman numerals in the Super Bowl and another one. From the last one:

You can't miss it. It's affixed to the game like a tail on a kite - Super Bowl XXXVIII. For those who slept through Roman numeral class, that means Super Bowl 38.

Naturally the Simpsons made fun of the lack of knowledge about Roman numerals in the episode where the feud between Springfield and neighbouring Shelbyville was fought amongst the children of each town. Mrs. Krabapel is writing Roman numerals on the chalkboard when Bart and Milhouse have a conversation and Nelson has a surprise announcment:

Bart: Those Shelbyville kids think they're so hot, but you know what? They're not.
Milhouse: I really agree with you on this one, Bart.
Edna: Class, please! If you don't learn roman numerals, you'll never know the date certain motion pictures were copyrighted.
Nelson: [bursting in] Everybody come quick! Something's happened. No time to explain.
[all the children run out]
Edna: No, children, no! Your education is important. Roman numerals, et cetera. Whatever. I tried! [lights a cigarette]

Later, as Bart is running away from some Shelbyville punks, he suddenly and mistakenly runs into a tiger cage, and he needs to exit through door 7 in order to get out (the sign on the entrance says "Caution: exit through door 7 only. All other rooms contain man-eating tigers."), but notices that the doors have Roman numerals on them, and Bart exclaims to himself: "Roman numerals? They never even tried to teach us that in school."

After consulting with Milhouse to no avail, he remembers where he's seen Roman numerals:

Think, Bart. Where have you seen Roman numerals before? I know...Rocky V ["vee"]! That was the fifth one. So, Rocky five plus Rocky two equals...Rocky VII! "Adrian's Revenge"!

And naturally Bart escapes just as the kids tiger cage enter.
